The sweet fairy tale of overnight success: all-Canadian, pretty blonde is spotted by world-renowned photographer at a country music concert. Soon she’s flown to LA to meet one of the biggest career-launching designers in the fashion industry: Paul Marciano (Guess).
Vancouver, BC has created a few of these success stories and now our “it” girl Ashley Diana Morris is the most recent, as the newly discovered Guess model. She has been featured on Entertainment Tonight, etalk as well as in ELLE and Fashion Magazine, and more.
Ashley bears a striking resemblance to Anna Nicole Smith with a dash of Claudia Schiffer and Bridgett Bardot, has been named the new face for Guess Lingerie and Bikini.
“This feels like I won the Super Bowl of modeling. When Paul Marciano said that I will be one of the most recognized faces in the world because of Guess, I felt like I was following in the footsteps of women who I dreamed of being like since I was a little girl. I’m still pinching myself it’s all so surreal,” says the buxom blonde Morris.
So now I have to insert a little personal pride because in my day job I’ve worked along side Ashley and watched her dream as it was coming true. Go, Ashley, Go!
She’s the babe behind the oh-so-amazing brand Nasty Gal, and after starting her first vintage e-Bay store in 2006 Sophia Amoruso has grown her one women shop into a online international style source for new and vintage clothing, shoes, and the most hype accessories.
Cool “it” facts: That little vintage shop she started on e-Bay was run out of her aunt’s cottage & has now turned into a mega-brand worth a cool $130 million. And she’s under 30.
Years before the Nasty Gal’s passionate team of creative visionaries, Sophia thrifted for the website’s vintage gems, shot and styled each piece, controlled all of the shipping, and wrote all of the product descriptions for each look. Now this “it girl” is the CEO of this multi-million dollar “it” girl brand which happens to be one of my fave online stores.
But beyond that, Sophia has created a lifestyle brand where Nasty Gals all over the world can come to find unique and cultivated pieces that add something special to their wardrobes — even Forbes has taken notice to Sophia’s entrepreneurial success.
Sophia is definitely one to watch, because Nasty Gals Do “it” Better.
P.S. Speaking of Nasty Girl (did you see our Quartz Boots pick earlier this month?)
A new, up-and-comer on the scene is Elena Satine.
Around here in Vancouver she caught some attention as Aquaman’s wife Mera, on the now wrapped TV series Smallville. But it’s her next role that should have your curiousity.
With all the Marilyn Monroe hype thanks to “Smash” and Michelle Williams…now Elena Satine will dawn a Marilyn-esque bleach blonde persona in the upcoming new show Magic City. A new series set in 1959 Miami.
The actress/singer was born in T’bilisi, Georgia (former USSR) and raised in Sochi, Russia where her professional career as child artist from a varity show and by the age of just 9-years she won a number of international awards for her performances. Elena Satine became the youngest person to perform in the International Film Festival “Kinotavr”. And if this isn’t quirky: Satine received a “Diploma of Specialist in Acting Art” from the legendary Moscow Art Theater School, founded by Constantin Stanislavski.
That’s a long way from Miami & Frank Sinatra! But not for an “it” girl.
You should know who Lana Del Rey is. Really, you should.
Lana Del Rey does sad music, but not depressing don’t get out of bed sad. More like the kind that makes your heart tight – a friend recently compared her to the female version of Chris Issak singing “Wicked Games”. Her voice just sticks with you.
I’ve had a girl crush on Lana Del Rey for the last two months as she’s been on constant rotation on my iPod. But for some reason I wasn’t ready to share her here – I was in denial on her mass popularity.
The sultry singer, who boasts 9 million YouTube views of her self-directed clip “Video Games”, announces that her full album, “Born to Die,” will come out on Jan 30.
To give you a little insight, she is one of the most controversial indie artists right now. The New York native went from a struggling artist to being signed by Interscope and PR machine, transformed from Lizzy Grant into the ‘gangsta Nancy Sinatra’ persona of Lana Del Rey. Highly influenced by the glitz & glamour of The Old Hollywood, singer/songwriter Lana Del Rey derives her name from a combo of Lana Turner and the Ford Del Rey.
All the attention is on “Video Games” (well deserved) – and “Blue Jeans”. But a close second to Video Games is the ethereal “Diet Mtn Dew” and to check out her silly side “Kinda Outta Luck”.
Leandra’s quirky sense of style, combined with an impressively sharp wit, has caught the attention of major fashion designers like Michael Kors and Rachel Roy. At only 22, she’s already partnered with Gryphon, Bloomingdale’s, TiBi and has been been featured in Harpar’s Bazaar, Elle, Teen Vogue and the New York Times, to name a few. Her twitter account has over 43,000 followers and is growing by the day.
And to the women who follow her blog, “man-repelling” has become a verb to describe the effect certain outfits will have on the opposite sex. Medine says it best:
“Man Repeller is intended to chronicle all the fashion trends that women love and men hate. I started it because I am woman with a deep appreciation for harem pants. And sometimes blaming clothing on a sad love life is easier than blaming oneself!”
That sounds like an “it girl” to us!

British born Indian actress Katrina Kaif is Bollywood’s reigning queen.
Katrina Kaif started her career as a model and later made her Bollywood debut. Kaif has built herself quite a fan following in Bollywood in the past nine years but the 27-year-old is not content with her success and wants to focus on meaty roles which challenge her.
Kaif, whose “Mere Brother Ki Dulhan” releases in September, plays the role of Dimple Dixit, a crazy, whacky, independent girl, who finally settles down with a ‘rich sorted package’.
This Bollywood Glam Doll is the toast of the season as not too long ago she was the only Bollywood Actress to feature on the India Today’s Elite Power list and has the most Google searches than any other Indian celebrity. If that wasn’t all Katrina was immortalized by Mattel who created a one-of a-kind ‘I Can Be a Movie Star’ Barbie Doll sketched on her image.
And if that wasn’t enough this lady is globally hot, hot, hot: Katrina Kaif yet again toped the list of the Sexiest Women 2011 conducted by the world’s largest men’s lifestyle magazine –FHM (she also won two pervious years)
But we think it’s more impressive she was voted the most ideal Indian celebrity match for Prince William (if Kate wasn’t in the picture, of course) in an online survey by matrimony website shaadi.com.
As a kid, did you ever experiment with Kool-Aid as a hair dye, only to immediately regret it while begging your mother to get it out? Looks like you may have been on to something.
Model newcomer Charlotte Free has been dominating the runways with her badass attitude and fuchsia pink hair. A photographer at an arcade discovered the Los Angeles native, and since then there’s been no looking back.
What makes her stand out to us is she’s demanding attention despite standing at just 5’7″ – short by model standards. Charlotte has proven herself as a force to be reckoned with and made her debut walking for Richard Chai’s Fall 2011 show. Since then, Free has romanced the runways more attune to her eccentric style such as: Topshop Unique, House of Holland, and Vivienne Westwood, and has been shot by photographer Craig McDean and styled by Marie Amelie Sauve for Interview.
You go Ms Free! we can’t wait to see what hair colours she has in store along the boisterous way her career is starting.

Jennifer Lawrence is this month’s “it girl” because it’s not everyday a soft-spoken, down-to-earth and little-known indie actress manages to make a splash on the mainstream movie scene due to a single film role, and then go on to earn an Oscar nomination and land the lead role in one of the most anticipated films of the decade, all in the same year.
She debuted in Winter’s Bone as Ree Dolly, a desolate teenager burdened with the role of caring for her family. Already a natural athlete, Jennifer’s role allowed her to become an even more kick-ass chick: for her role as Dolly, she learned to skin squirrels, chop wood and fight. Next, Jennifer will be picking up the bow and arrow and doing intensive track training for possibly the biggest role of her career: she’ll appear as beloved protagonist Katniss Everdeen in the film adaptation of Suzanne Collins’s explosive series The Hunger Games, a book series as loved as Harry Potter and slated to become the next Twilight trilogy.
Yet even with all this fame and fortune, Jennifer remains that same grounded indie actress who keeps it real: “I’d rather look a little chubby on camera and look like a person in real life, than to look great onscreen and look like a scarecrow in real life.” — Definitely a heroine we can appreciate.
Jennifer Lawrence has burst out of obscurity and into the Hollywood limelight with her sultry looks & raw talent. You can catch her right now as Mystique, in X-Men: First Class. Add to that, she’s #10 on 2011 Maxim “Hot 100” women list, and you’ve got a recipe for the next big superstar.

She has modelled in fashion campaigns for brands such as Burberry, BCBG & Ralph Lauren, but she is most known from the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show.
Whiteley is now strutting from catwalk to big screen. She will be making her big-debut in this summer’s Transformers: Dark of the Moon (trailer) replacing Megan Fox’s role. Explaining her surprising role in the film, she says, “Michael Bay and I had worked together for a Victoria’s Secret commercial.”
The sexy British actress and model ranked as #1 on Maxim’s Hot 100 list. When she first heard she topped it, she thought a mistake had been made.
With legs that go on forever and lips that make us forget about Angelina Jolie, we are rooting for her in the upcoming role. She’s got some big stilettos to fill and all eyes will be on her (not on the robots). Her name may be a mouthful, but we only need 2 words to describe her: it girl. Oh, and she’s still just 24.
Beauty tip Quote:
“Good sexy bedroom hair should be just a little tousled, nothing too neat. Also, drink a big bottle of water every day, as it will take away puffiness–Fiji is best. Everybody rolls their eyes at this tip, but it does work–water is the drug of God, that’s what I say.”
You probably recognize her as the interminably cheerful Poppy in the 2008 comedy Happy-Go-Lucky. A role, that we may add, won her a Golden Globe (for Best Actress!) along with numerous critics’ awards.
This understated, shy gal is not a fan of the limelight and we love how well she has handled her stardom. We can’t pin her down for any specific type of roles, as a quick glance of her resume makes that clear. She most recently made her debut on Broadway in 2010, and has hopes to stay there.
“more people are aware of me, which is something for an actor. But there are only so many really good scripts around at one time. I’ve been lucky to be presented with interesting and intelligent ones.”
~ after her role in Happy Go Lucky
It doesn’t take long to realize why Ksenia Solo grabbed our attention, besides her piercing blue eyes and exotic looking features, this 23 year old actress left a lasting impression even with her small role in the new hot film Black Swan.
The lithe Latvia-born Canadian actress is no stranger to the ballet stage on set, she has been dancing since childhood and her own mother was a lifelong ballerina.
“I didn’t experience that world (of ballet) as intensely as it’s portrayed in the film, but I do have a sense of the sort of commitment you have to make (Elle Canada).”
Ksenia is best known for her previous role as Zoey Jones on the APTN series renegadepress.com, however she currently plays “Natasha” in The CW’s series Life Unexpected, and co-stars as “Kenzi” in the Showcase cult-series Lost Girl.
Easily moving from her dark role in Black Swan to the comic relief in Lost Girl, we’ll be keeping our eyes open to see what this “it” girl takes on next – – we hear she’s also an aspiring director.

This month’s “it” girl, Caitlin Cronenberg, comes from creepy Cronenberg DNA. Creepy as in The Fly, Crash, Dead Zone, and other David Cronenberg films.
“I’m always going to be my father’s daughter and I’m never going to be anything but proud of that,” she says. “I know I’m leaving myself open to people’s judgments. It’s a similar feeling to being nude, you’re exposed.” (National Post).
Cronenberg’s affinity for fashion led her to a degree in Fashion Design at Ryerson University. Upon graduation in 2006, she decided to merge her love for fashion with her distinctive eye for capturing moments on film and pursued a career in her true passion: photography.
She’s been published in publications around the world including Hello! Canada, Elle Canada, and Vanity Fair. And this summer, at the ripe age of 25 she’s completed her first book of photography (Poser). Oh, and the book of fantastic shots, comes with a forward penned by actor Jeff Goldblum (being the daughter of director David Cronenberg has certain perks),
