Despite many having to succumb to shopping on a tighter budget in 2009 – it was an absolutely fantastic year for fashion nonetheless.
The 2009 top fashion trends that stole my heart and robbed me of all my money:

• Bold shoulders
• Military Inspired Jackets
• Statement necklaces
• Over-the-knee Boots
• Menswear Inspired pieces
• Return of Distressed Denim
• Biker Brigade (studs, leathers, hardware)
• Jewel encrusted/sequined clothing
• Feathers (’cause they’re plain fun)

Trends I hope to never see again…

• Celebrity designers that know nothing about the art of clothing
• Mismatched denim on denim
• Harem pants… I tried, I failed-and by the looks of it so did everyone else.

Global bean counters predict that 2010 will bring brighter days – and we should see fashion rise back up to where it belongs! Happy New Year!!

After a little bit of drama actually getting from London to Toronto last week, but I’m finally settled. Don’t ask me what day it is though?! We’ve rubbed elbows with Colin Farrell, Clive Owen (ladies this man is way better looking in real life, talk about ‘movie star’ GQ glam), to Chris Rock and Julianne Moore.

Toronto International Film Fest (TIFF) 2009 had huge star power rolling in – from Oprah to Drew Barrymoore. And I’m a fortunate chicka who’s friends’ pad is smack in the middle of the noise. And for my daily gym time in the building I seem to always be on the same sched as a few smaller name actors, like Christopher Gorham (Harpers Island) and some other chickie pooh and her trainer getting ready for some action flick.

The highlight has been the after-party for Harry Brown (good flick guys!) which was hosted by London’s Soho House/Shoreditch in a section of the subway station. The waiting platform transformed into one of their private houses including the same Cowshed toiletries (very funny) and on each side of the platform was a stopped subway train that you could cool off on with their AC, dance or hang out in. Very very cool.

I started to talk about this trend last week – with it’s not just finishing a broken in handbag, ripped jeans, or wrinkled suits. But it’s also a hole look – Depression Chic.

With an insight that’s downright uncanny, designers worked both sides of the crash of 1929, turning out glittery flapper frocks ala 2009 (Alberta Ferretti, right) and faded sack dresses (Burberry left) in equal measure. W Magazine.

Here’s a carry-over from 2008 that is going to be a huge trend in 2009:  Sheer fabrics. Ah, don’t fear! Its not all tight, see-thru tops that feature your colored bra like in the 1990’s when we last saw this look.

The transparent look was all over the Spring 09 runways at BCBG Max Azria, Monique Lhullier, John Galliano, and Stella McCartney. Delicate fabrics like chiffon were mixed with muted colors and pastels to create a fairy-tale inspired, ultra feminine looks. Tight sheer pieces, layers, and the much sought after delicate, Grecian-goddess draping.

Sheers and chiffons are just plain sexy. Some recent examples of doing this sheer trend right are Lily Allen and Emma Watson.

Don’t know about you, but after one too many Boxing Day sales I’m actually all winter-shopped out. I shopped smart though – and kept some spring 2009 trends in mind so some of my sale purchases might carry over.

The “it” color for spring will be HOT pink. While cobalt blue was the ‘it’ color of 2008, magenta is shaping up to be the must-have shade of ‘09.  Other color trends are dusty rose (which looks bad on this gal), lilac, slate grey (blue/grey), lime and navy.

Other spring trends to keep in mind while shopping the sales…

• Sophisticated Trench
• Color Block Prints
• Carry overs from last season: Oversize necklines, Zipper accents, Big bangles
• Butterflies, frills and ruffles (aka girly)
• Gold jewels and Gold hues
• 80’s are still lingering, but think more late 80’s and shoulder pads, big hair, and huge earrings are optional.
