Jennifer Heil, is the first Canadian athlete to win a medal at the 2010 Winter Olympics. She won silver in woman’s freestyle mogul. Woo Hoo!

Go Canada Go! that’s an “it girl” worth watching

I think that one of the coolest bands has got to be The Gossip. And the lead vocals is this month’s “it girl” Beth Ditto. She doesn’t look stereotype model pretty, but man does she have something.

I love this quote from an Elle interview, “…’interviewing the Gossip’s Beth Ditto is like trying to hold a conversation with a combination of your niece on a Skittles high and a gracious, wisecracking Rhoda Morgenstern,” Read more.

Funny thing is this past summer I ended up with them in closed quarters – okay more like back corner – of Bungalow 8. Beth Ditto was this ball of energy that fired up a bunch of to dance to hip hop song (so fun) – and as she yelled “I love this song!!!” I had to ask her who it was. She said, but too much champers erased it from my memory.

After I learned this fun crew, side saddled with Peaches Geldorf, was The Gossip. I downloaded some of their songs and fell in love with Beth’s voice.

There will be much more to come from Beth and this band.

Sometimes being an “It Girl” all starts with the name.  Something that Carly Pope has a check mark beside.

Nylon Mag shared they do “It Girl” nominations based on a girls’ ability to do virtually nothing except look pretty and be well connected.  Our Nov pick is about the girl from Vancouver that works hard to make it happen.

We truly have a girl crush on her after her most recent role as an edgy Rolling Stone reporter (flirting with dirty Duchovny) on Californication and another fav role as Kris in “Young People Fucking,” (segway: she volunteers for Vancouver Options for Sexual Health). She is also an “It Girl” because she loves coming home and hanging with her friends and being real when she’s not in the LA spotlight.

We’ll be watching for her new show “Day One” on NBC, airing right after the Olympics.

Dont’ groan at our pick for this month’s “it” girl. We debated on if this was a sad publicity stunt or pretty damn ballsy. Since we try to be opinionated AND open minded to what beauty and “it” means…Nicole brings you: Carmen Electra

Call me the bad girl out of the writers here on theitlists.com or maybe call me the rocker.  I’m dying for a new look – I’ve been in the bathroom trying to decide if my face is too small for a bald patch.  Sometimes you just see something on someone and you think “it’s just so it!  But you couldn’t possibly pull it off.”

With a wrong choice of a wacky new coat or a wild handbag you can recover from…but from an exposed piece of scalp (not so much).  I wish I had the guts – so let’s not forget that being gutsy is one type of “it girl.”

You may not have heard of Alexa Chung yet, but she’s an It Brit on the rise. So put her on your radar.

Alexa is a British model-turned-TV presenter, now hosting “The Alexa Chung Show” on MTV. The live daily features celeb talk and live music. And she dawned the Elle UK cover back in October.

You’ll likely recognize Josie Maran as the face behind so many Maybelline ads. We’re picking her as an “it girl” because of her new contributions to making us all beautiful - not by slick ads but with some green makeup.

The birth of her first child jumpstarted Josie’s latest endeavor – Josie Maran Cosmetics. Josie explains, “Becoming a mother inspired me to take a look at my life and ask, “What can I do for the world? How can I contribute?” Having spent so many hours in the makeup chair, Josie was ready to create her own signature eco-friendly line.

P.S. Her Argan oil has had buzz for awhile – but I’m told a visit to Whole Foods will also score you some good Argan oil. But now she’s done a bronzer version worth checking out.

Amber alert. Amber Heard that is. She’s about to be name to recognize – just check out her IMDB page. From All the Boys Love Mandy Lane to Pineapple Express, and next up she’s in The Informers, based on Bret Easton Ellis’ (Less Than Zero, American Psycho) novel of the same title.

What I’m most amped for is that Heard just began filming Hunter S Thompson’s 2nd novel, The Rum Diary. Johnny Depp is her co-star, and Heard reportedly beat won out over Scarlett Johansson and Keira Knightley for the role.

Pay attention to Leila Moss. Her status has recently advanced to an “it” girl this month by none other than Alexander McQueen himself.

Last week, within the media hype for McQueen’s upcoming Target collection, came the confirmation of her early adopters’ presence: Leila Moss is officially McQueen’s newest muse.

She’s also lead singer of blues-rock group, The Duke Spirit, where she’s definitely developed a cult following as a leader of indie’s femme elite - and accidental underground style guru.

No wonder McQueen wants to brand the alpha females of his universe with her superlative sense of style. She’s a diamond in the rough – some of the best it girls are just that.

Over the years the Nordic’s have brought us an eclectic array of decent popstars – The Cardigans, Robyn, Annie…and edgdy queen of them all, Bjork. We won’t count Aqua.

The latest addition is Lykke Li. The 22 year old was raised by Swed hippies. She’ll take monochromatic palattes and Acne jeans over couture. Her fashion may be a bit tomboy-chic, but her tunes are all girl.

Sugary, charming melodies, stand alone groovers, and minimalist backup. Lykke Li’s album Youth Novels came out last year, and that was her whistling on the track (I love) Young Folks. Now she’s booked for Cochella music festival this summer – she’ll be in amazing company.

The current reigning queen of the fickle world of New York cool is Leigh Lezark. She’s 22 yrs, a DJ, model, Karl Lagerfeld’s latest muse. And if that wasn’t enough to be an ‘it girl’ than consider that Guardian UK is predicting that this ridiculously cool and ridiculously beautiful gal’s sharp bob haircut is destined to be this year’s “Aniston”.

She’s part of the New York City-based DJ trio the Misshapes. And if she looks familiar, but you can’t quite place her – Lezark appeared in the recent ad campaign for Roberto Cavalli’s H&M line.

During the last NY Fashion Week Leigh Lezark pulled front row clout at least 21 shows – so I’d put odds she’s picked up a few fashion tips which spell ‘it girl’ to me!

Peaches Geldof has alot more going on than just the next party.  As the daughter of Sir Bob Geldof (Boomtown Rats singer and Live Aid organizer) and the late Paula Yates she’s grown up in the limelight. Peaches Honey Blossom Michelle Charlotte Angel Vanessa (yes, that’s her full name) is not just the spoiled brat everybody wants to label her as, but is undeniably living the life of a socialite celeb.

At age 15, she wrote for The Daily Telegraph representing the voice of youth.  At 16 she produced and wrote a documentary for Sky One about teenage sex & angst called Inside the Teenage Mind, and in 2006 lived in Morocco with a Muslim teenager to make a documentary for Channel 4 called A Beginner’s Guide to Islam.

Now the 19-year-old has been sporting sexy black undies for Agent Provocateur’s “Season of the Witch” campaign. In between tying the knot with Max Drummey (a member of the indie band Chester French), she’s hosting NylonTV with partner in crime, Cory Kennedy, and has landed her own column in Nylon. For fun she is a half of the DJ act Trash Pussies with her friend Fifi Brown; they occasionally play in Ibiza! And now her PPQ line just debuted at Selfridges.

And that’s all before she’s even hit her 20’s!!

Not only does Georgina Reilly have a cool name, but she is following suite to the indie-hit Juno unleashing indie-starlets like Ellen Page.

She’s dubbed Canada’s “next big thing,” by website du jour She Does the City.  It may just be that Georgina’s next big role would make Nova Scotia’s Ellen Page yesterday’s "It Girl" news.

It may also be that Director, Bruce McDonald who is also responsible for casting Ellen Page, has that golden touch when it comes to It Girls.  He cast Georgina in her debut role in Pontypool, one of the most eagerly awaited films at this year’s Toronto International Film Festival and getting alot of attention. As we anticipate the blossoming of this 22-year old gal’s career.

The freshest Bond girl in years! Gemma Arterton will be hitting the silver screen in Quantum of Solace this October.

Gemma might be beautiful, talented and one of Britain’s brightest acting hopes, but according to the Guardian she doesn’t have what it takes to be a diva: She’s just too normal. ‘I still have student debts to pay off,’ says the 22-year-old, who recently beat 1,500 nubile hopefuls to become the newest Bond Girl. ‘I think I’ve used most of my earnings buying bits and bobs from Primark.’

The stunning actress is fronting the newest fragrance from Avon – Bond Girl 007 – a partnership with James Bond entertainment; said to be the biggest global fragrance launch of the year.

Once she’s done with a bit of spying, Gemma has bagged the lead role in BBC’s blockbuster production of Tess Of The D’Urbervilles. First she makes out with Daniel Craig, and then an iconic maiden. That’s an “it” girl.

It Girl Olivia Thirlby is dope.  She is dope in her new movie and pretty dope in real life too. 

Her performance as the sultry teenaged, summer love interest of Josh Peck in The Wackness was definetely slick.  She plays a "way to cool for school" hottie that falls for the “cant buy me love” style lackie who happens to be her step dad’s weed dealer. 

A very modern day scenario.  This movie is not as wacky as you think because it turns out to be about some simple and real aspects of life, like focusing on the ‘dope parts’ and not so much the ‘wack parts.’ 

The best part of Olivia’s real life attitude is her real approach to living life in New York because of the simple convenience of it.  She is quoted in this month’s Marie Claire that she likes living in New York opposed to LA because “ If you are cooking breakfast and need blueberries five minutes later you are back home.  In LA its 30 minutes later.” 

With an attitude like that ‘her dopeness’ will surely be getting what she wants, when she wants it. That’s an "it girl" in our books.
