Sleep On “it” - Graffiti Pink

» Filed under fashion on March 28, 2007

Finding drop-dead, sexy lingerie isn’t difficult. What can be challenging is finding something that is sexy-cute, but doesn’t have to scream ‘come hither and take me now‘. Sometimes subtle is better.

If you’re bored with tanktop and boy shorts then here’s a site with some cute alternatives for that in between. Graffiti Pink.

They’ve selected some of the hottest lingerie designers, some of them established names, some still considered "up and coming" but are inspired, edgy, stylish designers.

A few picks would be this Cotton Candy Graffiti Pink Romper (left). The picture doesn’t do it justice. This is super cute! and soft, soft thin cotton that feels cozy, but is barely there. Cotton Candy is the house line of Graffiti PInk. The whole line keeps to the basics.

And the Princesse Tam-Tam Icone Cami (right) that makes me want to round up a slumber party right now. And come on, with a name like that - Princesse Tam-Tam! That just spells out frisky.

Don’t forget to check out the Disney Couture jewels.

Drug Store Lashes - Rimmel

» Filed under beauty on March 27, 2007

Rimmel’s new Eye Magnifier* Mascara is causing a buzz because it uses the same rubber spike brush format as Mac Factor and Covergirl. The formula claims to "boost volume and length to the limit", while providing separation and control.

First, it’s not bad, but it’s not clump free. It can leave clump up if you use a heavy hand. The bristles are not as "sharp" as Max or Covergirl’s versions, but they are of varying lengths. The varying is what helps in the volume department; trade-off is less than perfect separation.

The product itself give better depth and lengthens a lot better too. A teeny bit of smudging sometimes, but it’s far better than many volumizing mascaras I’ve tried.

Moderate clumping issues aside, I quite like this one. When I want big drama lashes, it’s usually because I’m going out or being fab, and my mascara needs to keep up. One of the best mascaras out there for function and value.

For a daytime alternative, a worthy option is Rimmel Lycra Lash Extender. Love how it separates into very natural looking, feathery lashes, no clumping. It adds some length, but not the 60% it touts on the package. I don’t want big volume for daytime so this has just the right amount of curve for my day.

Bottom Line: Magnifier gives "Lisa Simpson" lashes, Extender is more natural.

*I don’t know why the name changes, but this did originally launch on some continents as Magnif’eyes.

Harajuku “it” with Gwen Stefani

» Filed under fashion on March 26, 2007

Music and fashion Icon Gwen Stefani’s introduces a Japanese inspired streetwear clothing collection – Harajuku Lovers. Named after the trendsetting metropolitan neighborhood, Harajuku in Tokyo, Japan it’s no wonder Harajuku Lovers is so playful and all about self-expression.

Harajuku Lovers is more fan-affordable than Gwen Stefani’s other successful clothing line L.A.M.B., but just as fun!

Okay – there are a few that belong on 14 year-old gothic Lolitas, but there’s also a whole bunch of truly, beautiful Alice in Wonderland-esque tees and hoodies.

I bought this Circus Baby - The Rainbow Fleck at Macy’s…it’s hard to see but there’s this cool, multi-color fleck in the material – subtle but makes it very original looking. Best – even though it’s a thick, rich feeling material it’s still drapes a little.

Here are some more favs within the collection. The Fatal Burnout Leopard - in  petal (front and back shown), or the Hoody- Main Foil Leopard.

This ain’t no Hello Kitty.

The Look for Less: Two Fab Dresses! FAB SUGAR  (read full article)

Steve Madden, who already produces cute, affordable shoes, is now making dresses. What a smart move, with dresses being one of the key clothing items for Spring. Not only are these dresses super cute, they are attainable with price tags ranging from $148 - $182.

A couple of JessNess’s faves looked familiar to me…because they were pretty darn close to a couple designer dresses by Derek Lam & Gucci.

Benefit Brow Zing

» Filed under beauty on March 21, 2007

Rookie! Before I did the chardonnay shoe shopping I did one other bloop. I had my Tweezerman’s confiscated at the airport security. I got so busy and I kept forgetting to pickup a new pair, and then I remembered another benefit to San Francisco, Benefit’s Brow Bar at Macy’s.

The tiny wait passed as some cutie showed me her favorite: Some Kind-a Gorgeous. A cream-to-powder formula that looks greasy, but goes on silky translucent (apparently for almost any skin tone).

Just in time for me to get shaped, trimmed, waxed, and (politely) lectured about my arch placement. But to hold me thru a bit of grow out (and until I find another brow bar), you gotta love Benefit Cosmetics Brow Zings. There are other wax and shadow combos that have popped up, but I think the price and quality of this set is an "it".

brow-zing.jpgAnd one more Benefit that found it’s way in my trip, was that I finally got to use my Glamorous Gabbi makeup bag. I’m so used to stuffing toiletries and cosmetics in one I didn’t even realized I was missing out on this.

Head Shaker - Don’t Wash “it”

» Filed under beauty on March 19, 2007

Extend a blow out, or shampoo less to be easy on the dye job. Either way you’ve got a bit of oily tresses to contend with. Here’s a quirky take on comparing the usual solutions of baby powder, corn starch or Bumble and Bumble. But the real winner is the new Open Sundaes - Hair Powder.

So corn starch and baby powder is cheap, more natural, but on the downside it’s "white" and the worst part is that you smell like "baby powder."

Bumble and Bumble’s Hair Powder is pricey, and potentially messy (because it comes in some fun colors). The mess is manageable if you only spray the product on your roots (and shake off any excess after it has dried). You’ll need to wash your hair before you go to bed, or you’ll end up with color stains on your pillows. Where this product kicks is that it infuses hair with amazing volume.

If the volume isn’t worth the price, then here’s my latest find with Open Sundaes hair powder. Rather than white it comes in Lemon, Strawberry or Chocolate Shakes. It’s a good thing the package says "this product is not edible, do not eat!" because it smells that good. Corn starch, but with silk protein, other goodies, and a subtle dash of color is just the recipe for my ‘in between shampoo’ shake downs.

Ju$t Another Object “it”

» Filed under guilty pleasures on March 14, 2007

A recent press release made me chuckle, in a nervous way. CITIZEN:Citizen received a cease and desist order from McDonald’s to pull from their collection a gold plated version of McD’s 1980’s coffee stirrer.

The original plastic coffee stirrer was taken out of production when the fast food chain discovered it was being used for drug purposes in the 80’s. McDonald’s became uncomfortable with the affiliation when the stirrers constantly showed up as Exhibit A’s in drug cases. Eek.

Ju$t Another Rich Kid & Tobias Wong modernized this as a parody and commentary on how culture affects and sometimes dictates an objects status and function. From the same designers is this cool, but creepy "Murdered"necklace. But for something safer, I love the rubber-dipped white chandelier.  CITIZEN: Citizen is pricey, but hugely unique.

Tea Time Tops

» Filed under fashion on March 13, 2007

I was already picturing myself at an upcoming birthday gathering - we’re doing high tea! "Fresh" and fun is how I felt like in every little top I put on at Anthropologie.

Perfect for tea, I’d be wearing this Daydream Peasant Top in the blue. I’m usually a fan of anything chocolate (this one does come in dark brown), but this blouse shows the detail so much more in the blue. It’s not too perwinkle, or too washed out. I’m super fussy with the blues and this ones a good blue.

But if you want a bit more color here’s another Anthropologie option - Flores Peasant Blouse. I think this shop is the only place that can pull off patchy worky with out crying out hippie, just "pretty" hippie.

P.S. The only reason I didn’t grab these was that I was at the end of my trip and my visa was getting weary.

Shopping My Heart in San Francicso

» Filed under shoes on March 12, 2007

My day job sent me to a video game conference in San Francisco. A rare spot where men to women ratio of 50:1 isn’t necessarily a good thing. So many fashionably-challenged boys in one place. The best part about the week was my daily walk from the funky, boutique Hotel Triton to the conference - via Union Square and Burberry, Marc Jacobs, Anthropologie, and even a multi-storey Forever 21 (holy crap).

The result of all the walking were super sore feet. You can imagine my daily nirvana at the Aerosole store. My best purchase was their shoe of the month, Aerosole Kin Ship (love the name). I haven’t owned a pair of white shoes since I was six, but this combo of white patent top with brown was too fun to pass*.

As if walking the tradeshow floor wasn’t killer enough, there was the evening cocktail circuit. I had one too many chardonnays, sore feet and Macy’s was still open - I found this take on the ballet slipper - Jessica Simpson Leve. The square suede toe makes ballet look more grown up, glam.

I love the shoes! And the champagne color rocks. If I’d had one glass less of wine maybe I’d have been able to process that when the 7.5 display shoe was a bit too small, and my usual 8.5 was too big…maybe I’d try on the 8 instead of taking the 7.5 because it was easy (and they’ll stretch). Cheers.

And one more find too good to not share. I said it last fall, I say it again. I don’t know who’s designing for Aerosole now, but they get the nod from me. For the cocktail round two I picked up Aerosole Chrome in this blue. The darkest brown is a great choice too, but this blue feels more luxe.

*I can’t find the white and brown anywhere on line. Amazon’s got the best prices on these new styles, and they carry the Kin Ship  in yellow (a great way to work this Spring’s hot color into your wardrobe if it doesn’t look good near your face (like me).

Fashion Faux Pas Fix #2 - Hanes “it”

» Filed under fashion on March 7, 2007

Hanes-bra.pngJennifer Love Hewitt tackles women’s least favorite topic – the uncomfortable bra. The new spokesbabe for Hane’s All-Over Comfort Bra with ComfortSoft Straps.

The straps won’t slip, the cushioned underwire won’t poke, and it’s tagless so it won’t itch.

The commercial sneak peeks into a fictitious day in Hewitt’s life. She navigates a gamut of wardrobe changes, coordinated by stylist-to-the-stars Jessica Paster, Hewitt goes from rocker to romantic, until she decides that even the most fab designer dress doesn’t look camera-ready with a bra strap that continuously slips off her shoulder. Problem resolved – when she swaps out for the ComfortSoft Straps bra!

Fashion Faux Pas Fix - Luxe “it” Link

» Filed under guilty pleasures on March 6, 2007

Okay first of all I wish I had a Chloe purse that deserved one of these. If you do, I bow my visa and I recommend Luxe Link to protect that investment.

Even if you’ve spent less than a small fortune on your bag you still might be adverse to tossing it on the floor during dinner. While the place seems nice enough, the ground is not quite up to par for your new Marc Jacobs bag.  We’ve all been there.

What to do?  Three former New York University roommates have solved this fashion faux pas with their creation, Luxe Link.

No larger than the size of Beyonce’s hoop earring, you simply unwind the chrome chain link, and place the circular top onto the edge of the table, and voila!  You have an enviable hook to hang your purse.

Uncork “it” Shoes

» Filed under shoes on March 5, 2007

Go au natural this spring. Okay, maybe not bare foot natural, but rather cork. In Style magazine has been talking up cork instead of the old espadrilles

Not only does cork make for an exotic feature on your tootsies, but it is also really light weight. Makes your wedges or pumps as light as a pair of Keds! Another cork trend is to have cut out holes in the middle of the wedges.

For a splurge...Oscar de la Renta in all cork from tip to tip.
